7 Warning Signs Your Car Needs Brake Repair Immediately

May 2025 · 5 min read · By Kasimolo Auto Masters Team

In Nairobi's fast-moving, stop-start traffic — from Uhuru Highway to Mombasa Road — your brakes are working constantly. They are, without question, the single most important safety system on your vehicle. Yet brake problems are among the most commonly ignored issues in Kenya.

The reason is simple: brake wear is gradual. You don't notice it day-to-day. Until you really need them — and they fail.

1. Squealing or Screeching When You Brake

That high-pitched squeal when you apply the brakes is not just annoying — it is your car's built-in warning system. Most modern brake pads have a small metal wear indicator designed to squeal when pads reach minimum safe thickness. If you hear consistent squealing when braking, your pads need replacing soon. Do not delay — once squealing starts, you have very little pad life left.

2. Grinding or Growling Sound

If squealing has progressed to a grinding, metal-on-metal growl, your brake pads are completely worn through. The metal backing plate is now pressing directly against the rotor. This is a driving emergency. Every kilometre you continue risks deeply scoring the rotor — turning a simple pad replacement into a much more expensive pad-plus-rotor job. 3. The Car Pulls to One Side When Braking

If your car veers left or right when you press the brake pedal, it could indicate a seized caliper, uneven pad wear, a collapsed brake hose, or contaminated brake fluid on one side. Any of these can cause you to lose directional control during emergency braking. Have it checked immediately.

4. Brake Pedal Feels Soft or Spongy

Your brake pedal should feel firm. If it feels soft, spongy, or sinks to the floor before the car slows, you may have air in the brake lines, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. Do not drive the vehicle until it has been professionally inspected.

5. Steering Wheel Vibrates During Braking

A vibrating pedal or steering wheel when braking usually means warped brake rotors — caused by heat from extended heavy braking on hills, or rapid cooling when driving through water. Warped rotors reduce stopping power unpredictably.

6. Brake Warning Light On

The brake warning light can indicate low brake fluid, worn pads (electronic wear indicator), ABS faults, or a handbrake issue. Never ignore a lit brake warning light — even if braking feels normal.

7. Burning Smell While Driving

A sharp, acrid burning smell after heavy braking can indicate a seized caliper causing continuous friction, or severely overheated brakes. Pull over safely, let the brakes cool, and bring the car in for inspection.
