Nairobi is warm, the traffic is heavy, and your car's air conditioning has decided today is not the day. If you are getting lukewarm or hot air from your vents, here are the most likely causes — and what each fix involves.
1. Low Refrigerant (Gas) — Most Common Cause
Refrigerant is what actually creates cold air. Unlike engine oil, it is not consumed — but it can slowly leak through connections, hoses, or minor component cracks. Over 2–4 years, levels drop enough to significantly reduce cooling. A gas recharge is the most common and most affordable A/C fix.

2. A/C Compressor Failure
The compressor pressurises the refrigerant. If it fails, no cooling is possible. Signs: A/C stops cooling suddenly, loud clicking when A/C is switched on, A/C works intermittently then stops completely.
3. Clogged Cabin Filter
If your A/C is blowing weak, musty air rather than no air, the cabin filter is often the culprit. Nairobi's traffic and dust clog cabin filters faster than most climates. Replacement: From KSh 800 plus fitment — quick and affordable.
4. Refrigerant Leak
If you had a gas recharge recently and cooling has failed again, you have a leak. Leaks must be detected and repaired before recharging — otherwise you are repeatedly losing gas. We use UV dye and electronic detectors to find leaks in hoses, fittings, the condenser and evaporator.
5. Blocked or Damaged Condenser
The condenser (at the front of the car, ahead of the radiator) dissipates heat from the refrigerant. If blocked by debris or bent in a minor accident, A/C efficiency drops significantly.
6. Electrical Faults
A faulty A/C pressure switch, relay, temperature sensor, or control panel can prevent the compressor from engaging — giving the appearance that the A/C is on but with no cooling effect.
